Roads Minister is backingSarah’s school safety drive

Sarah stepped in after pupils and staff at St Michael’s Primary School at Playden raised concerns that there was a 60mph speed limit outside their school.

She visited the school and joined pupils in helping to raise awareness of the issue.

Since then she launched a campaign to improve road safety for children at all primary schools in the Rye and Hastings area.

Richard Burden met with staff and children at two Hastings primary schools recently.

At Sandown Primary School they are campaigning for a 20mph speed limit, safety barriers and a new crossing to be put in place, while at St Paul’s CofE School they want to save Lollypop men and women from the chop.

Sarah said: “I was moved to act when primary school pupils first wrote to me, expressing their concerns about speeding traffic outside schools.

“With more cars on our roads and cuts to road safety budgets, schools across Rother an Hastings will find their lollipop attendants under threat or vital road safety improvements delayed.

“There should be no price on a child’s head and we must act now, before it’s too late.”

Mr Burden said: “Since 2010 Ministers have shown that they are out of touch with road safety concerns.”

“They have axed targets to reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads and cuts mean that up to two thirds of local authorities are losing the lollipop men and women who’ve been keeping our children safe for so many years.”
