Pupils design a brilliant bench

PUPILS at Littlehampton Community School have welcomed a new and rather unusual bench to their campus.

Made from recycled car parts such as old dashboards, the bench was designed by pupils from the school alongside sculptor Gordon Young and was manufactured by Jago Developments in Chichester.

The mould for the bench that the pupils helped create will be used to make more benches in the future.

Littlehampton mayor Malcolm Belchamber was invited to a special breakfast at the bench on April 26 to officially declare it open for use.

Following meetings to discuss the creation of waymarkers in the town, the school's community liaison officer Sara Hopkins met with Gordon Young to see if he would visit the school to encourage pupils to do something practical to make a difference to their school environment.

He worked with a group of students to produce small models before a composite design was taken by Colin Farren at Jago Developments from which an original mould and the first bench was made.

Funding for the project came from Littlehampton Town Council.
