Eastbourne Borough Council has teamed up with voluntary sector organisations to put out the appeal.

In particular, they are appealing to people who have been furloughed and are now finding their days a bit too quiet.

Council leader David Tutt said he was delighted with the number of volunteers who were making themselves available to support the NHS and the council’s work with vulnerable groups.

But he said there was a constant need for helpers to get involved.

Councillor Tutt said, “There will be hundreds of people who have been furloughed due to this dreadful pandemic.

“So if you are bored with having to stay in and keen to play a part in the Covid fight-back, we’d love to hear from you.”

Voluntary umbrella organisation 3VA is co-ordinating the town’s amazing response to the deadly virus.

Chief executive Adam Chugg said, “We’ve set up a dedicated page on our website www.3va.org.uk and urge any furloughed people with a spare hour or two to get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.”

The council has set up a community hub as part of its response to the crisis. It has ramped up the packaging and distribution of thousands of food parcels. Nearly 550 have been given to foodbanks in Eastbourne and Lewes district.
