Police to join Brighton Pride celebrations

The force said its priority is the safety of all those taking part in the weekend's festivities as well as members of the local community.

But Sussex Police is also set to get involved with the festivities, and will have a stand in Preston Park where the force's LGBT officers and volunteers will be on hand.

Officers will also be sharing videos and pictures of the parade and celebrations on Snapchat and Instagram throughout the weekend.

Police confirmed last week that it would have armed officers and road barriers in place at Pride to keep the public safe.

Assistant Chief Constable Laurence Taylor said: “Months of preparation have taken place in the lead up to Pride and as in previous years, public safety is our main priority. We are taking all reasonable steps to ensure the wellbeing of those attending as well as minimising disruption to those going about their daily business.

“Similarly to last year we will have a number of armed officers working across the city over the weekend and we will again be making use of other safety measures such as road barriers in some parts of the city."

“As always, we ask that the public demonstrates a certain level of personal responsibility including things like taking care of belongings, following personal safety advice and flagging any issues or suspicious behaviour to event staff or police.

"Whilst we will be working with Brighton and Hove City Council to keep the city moving and safe throughout the day, there will inevitably be some disruption to traffic with such a large event, so if you were planning to come to the city, don't be put off but please do allow extra time and think about your travel plans.

“With Pride organisers, we want to promote an inclusive and enjoyable atmosphere for all. We look forward to seeing you there and wish you a fun Pride 2017.”

Saturday is the main day of celebrations with the carnival parade starting at Hove Lawns at around 11am followed by a ticketed event in Preston Park. In the evening the Pride Village Party is in Kemptown.

Anyone wishing to enter the St James' Street area between Old Steine and Upper Rock Gardens and Edward Street and the lower Marine Parade will need a wristband.

Pride director Paul Kemp said: "As we celebrate the milestone of the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales, this year's Pride is all set to be one of the best ever. Extensive planning takes place year round between Brighton Pride and our partners at sussex Police, Brighton and Hove City Council. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and South East Coast Ambulance Service.
