Pett Parish Council: The Council heard that the new recycling scheme was going well with 98% of households having their rubbish and recycling collected as planned. However 2% had experienced problems and Rother District Council had met with the contractor and there should be improvements almost immediately. Councillor Roger Bird also reported that the new Speedwatch scheme was coming together and should be operational soon. A new defibrillator had been installed outside Pett Village Hall, with a training and appreciation evening arranged for November 26. Pett Parish Council would be making representations to East Sussex County Council as part of the consultation on bus services. The meeting also heard that the Council had met with the Sports Association to discuss the new pavilion. There was a shortfall in funding that could be made up with a loan from the Public Works Loan Board but this would have to be paid out of the precept, which would involve a rise of between £4.25 and £5.27 per household, depending on the length of the term of the loan.

This matter will be the main agenda item at the next Parish Council meeting on October 21. It is here that villagers can see plans for the new pavilion and give their views on the future of this village asset.

Macmillan Coffee Morning: Don’t forget that this is on this morning at Pett Village Hall. It starts at 9am and finishes at noon so do come and support this worthy cause.

Harvest Home: Another good cause is, of course this event, which takes place tomorrow night – September 27. So don’t forget to leave items such as garden produce, bottles of wine, household wares, garden related equipment and ornaments on your doorstep tomorrow morning. The auction at 7:30pm and your support is always welcome.

Church Services: on Sunday September 28 – Harvest Festival, led by Merial Deasy, St Mary & St Peter, Pett at 9:30am; Sunday Service at the Methodist Chapel at 10:45am.

Village Choir: On Monday September 29 the Village Choir will meet again at 7:30pm in Pett Methodist Chapel.

Pett Older People’s Project: POPP on Tuesday September 30 will feature Roland Miles and the Village Choir. The session runs from 10:30am to 2:30pm and will include a two-course lunch for just £5.

Coffee Morning: What tempting treats will be on offer at the October Coffee Morning? To say nothing of the famous sausage rolls made by our dear butcher Phil! You need to come early if you want to have one of them! So why not come along and find out on Wednesday October 1? New faces are always welcome and the session lasts from 10am to 12 noon.

Mobile Library: Also on Wednesday October 1 the Mobile Library will be in Pett and Pett Level. It will start at the Church at 10.10am, moving on to Chick Hill at 10:50am and finishing at The Smuggler at 11.20am.

Flicks in the Village: On Thursday October 2 Flicks in the Village will be showing The Invisible Woman (12). Ralph Fiennes directs and stars in this romantic drama adapted from Clare Tomalin’s book about the relationship between celebrated 19th-century novelist Charles Dickens and his mistress. School teacher Nelly Ternan (Felicity Jones), now a wife and mother, looks back on her life as a young woman when, while working as an actress, she met the 45-year-old Dickens (Fiennes). Having become disenchanted with his wife Catherine (Joanna Scanlan), Dickens finds himself enamoured by the equally smitten Nelly and the two become romantically involved. However, they must keep their relationship a secret, meaning Nelly must live an almost invisible existence. The cast also includes Kristin Scott Thomas, Tom Hollander and Michelle Fairley. The film starts at 7:30pm with refreshments served from 7pm. Membership forms are available on the night or you can always pop into the Butchers shop in Pett and grab an application form.
