Petal power loses out to super veg at Walberton summer show

Vegetables provided some of the top exhibits in this year's summer show held by Walberton Horticultural Society.

The dismal weather of the preceding weeks enabled a large entry of

vegetables to form a highlight of the event at Walberton Village Hall.

David Campbell, the society's secretary, said: "The very high standard of many of the vegetable exhibits must at times have made the judges' job very difficult."

But the weather had taken its toll on the cut flowers. Their number of entries was down compared to previous summer shows. There was plenty of enthusiasm inside the hall, however, with about 240 exhibits in all.

Those who went along could marvel at the pot plant and floral art classes which attracted some excellent exhibits and added colour to the hall.

A large number of entries, from jam to Madeira cakes, was also a feature of the domestic section as examples of the culinary skills of the exhibitors.

Further high-quality pieces could be seen in the handicraft and art section to demonstrate the dedication and high standard of the exhibitors.

But the children's section was a disappointment. Just two exhibitors '“ Billy Chubb and Amelia-Rose Cox '“ took part, though both were to be commended.
