A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said crews were alerted to the incident at 10.40am: "Upon arrival fire crews found the cab of a heavy goods vehicle well alight with a diesel spill on the layby.

"Initially Joint Fire Control sent fire engines from Chichester and Bognor Regis to the scene, but an off-road vehicle from Storrington was later mobilised to assist with the diesel spill.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are working hard to extinguish the fire and make the scene safe. Fortunately there are no casualties.

“The road is now closed and we would ask that all residents avoid the area."
