Littlehampton cheerleaders chosen for Building Futures grant

Sussex Tornados Cheerleaders has been awarded £1,000 as part of this year’s £1million giveaway to groups across Britain.

The club has been running for more than 22 years and its 11 competitive teams are regularly placed at competitions across the country and abroad, including securing the Americheer International Champion top spot in Florida in 2014.

Carley Johnson, programme director and founding member, said: “The aim of the club is to provide a facility for children and young people in the community where they can learn championship cheerleading routines and life skills.

“This wonderful grant from Persimmon Homes will help us buy new safety equipment.”

The club usually trains on Lineside Industrial Estate and will be open again as soon as government restrictions allow.

The Building Futures scheme aims to support community groups working with under-18s across three categories, education and arts, health and sport.

In addition to hundreds of local donations of £1,000, 96 initiatives will go on to compete for top prizes of £100,000 through a national online public vote. The 2020 finalists will be announced on Monday, July 13, and the overall winners will be named at a gala dinner in October.
