Lewes Moving On 2020: theme of parade’s 19th year announced

Primary schools will look to fashions and fascinations from across the decades for inspiration for this year’s Moving On parade in Lewes.

Organiser Patina (parents and teachers in the arts) has announced that the event to mark year 6 leavers’ transition to secondary school and into adolescence will have the title We Are Making History and will be ‘a catwalk through time’.

Director of the community arts charity Caroline Croft says the theme has been chosen because it ‘could bring history to life for the children, looking through the lens of fashion as an exciting and creative way of identifying with people who have gone before’.

She said: “Moving On marks an important moment in our young people’s lives as they move into greater independence in their journey and grow into the adults they are going to be.

“This year’s theme will look at that sense of identity and how people throughout history have expressed themselves through what they wear.

“It is also a really playful way of looking at what influences our choices and the impact on the environment of the fashion decisions we make.”

Moving On, now in its 19th year, will take place on July 3 with pupils from 15 primary schools in the Lewes district signed up to process in costume and carrying carnival structures.

Patina will now consult with the schoolchildren and community on which eras they would like in the parade. The eras will then be allocated at random to the 15 schools to inspire the creative process.

Last year’s Moving On parade had the theme children’s literature with the title Once Upon a Moving On.
