Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the new national lockdown at the weekend as Covid-19 cases continue to rise at a concerning rate.

It will take place from November 5 until December 2 and people are being asked to stay at home unless for specific purposes – such as childcare, exercise, buying food, or if you cannot work from home.

Below are all the businesses, venues, and other public facilities which will be closing from Thursday (November 5).

‘Non-essential shops’

This includes clothing shops, electronics shops, vehicle showrooms, travel agents, betting shops, car washes, and vape shops.

All businesses which are considered ‘non-essential’ must close from Thursday.

Pubs, bars and restaurants

Pubs, bars and restaurants across Eastbourne will have to close, but can still provide takeaway and delivery food and drink, excluding alcohol.

Gyms and leisure centres

Leisure facilities must close – including gyms, swimming pools, golf courses and dance studios.

The Sovereign Centre said it was with a ‘heavy heart’ that it would be closing for a month, saying, “We’ve loved welcoming you all back and want to thank all our members for your support over this time.”

Entertainment

And entertainment venues including cinemas, museums, galleries bingo halls and zoos must also shut up shop.

This includes The Towner Art Gallery and Drusilla’s Park in Alfriston.

The popular zoo said, “We are sad to confirm Drusillas will be temporarily closed from Thursday, November 5.

“Please bear with us whilst we work through our plans moving forward and put things into place. We do hope to have Father Christmas as usual albeit with important social distancing measures in place and numbers strictly limited.

“Thank you for your support, understanding and patience during this extremely challenging time and we wish everyone well from us all at Drusillas.” ❤️

Any pre-booked online day tickets or VIP Experiences booked between November 5 and December 1 with Drusillas will be rescheduled.

Hairdressers and beauty salons

Hairdressers, beauty and nail salons, tattoo and piercing parlours, spas and tanning salons must also close from Thursday (November 5).

Libraries

Libraries are also having to close for the lockdown.

Langney Community Library in Langney Shopping Centre will close at 1pm on Tuesday (November 3) until after the lockdown period.

Members are asked to hold onto their borrowed books and return them when it reopens. Books will automatically be renewed during the lockdown.

And Old Town Community Library sad it is ‘with sadness’ it will have to close the library again on Thursday (November 5).

It will remain open on Tuesday (November 3) from 10am-5pm and Wednesday from 10am-1.30pm.

What about weddings and funerals?

Funerals can be attended by a maximum of 30 people but weddings are not permitted. Churches and other places of worship will close unless they are being used for a funeral or other specific reasons specified by the government.

Hotels and holiday accommodation

Holiday parks, hotels and B&Bs will also have to close for this four-week period, as overnight stays and holidays are not allowed.

But what can stay open?

Food shops, supermarkets, and garden centres are allowed to remain open, following covid-secure guidelines.

Retail which is considered non-essential can remain open for delivery to customers and click-and-collect.

Schools and universities can also remain open.

Public spaces like parks, playgrounds, public gardens, and the beach remain open.
