SNOW: What do we pay councils for?

Saturday was one of the rare occasions that I ventured into the Worthing shopping centre.

What on earth do we pay Worthing Council for?

The Montague precinct was like an ice-rink.

There wasn't a grain of salt or sand to be seen anywhere!

People were slipping and sliding about all over the place.

One poor lady was wrapped in a blanket, being attended by others '“ I assume whilst waiting for an ambulance.

Our local authority is very quick to stop skateboarders, or cyclists, using the substantially wide promenade '“ or allowing more and more parking wardens in the town '“ but when there's a real danger of accidents likely, they certainly are not doing their job.

As a rate payer, I would like to know who it is I'm paying to ensure our pedestrians can shop safely '“ and why that person felt it unnecessary to deploy others, who I pay, to grit and sand the busy pedestrian walkways.

Weather is rarely a surprise any longer, and the icy conditions started on Thursday night '“ which gave them plenty of time to do their job.

I don't expect the authorities to grit every road in the town '“ but to leave a major shopping area in the condition I witnessed on probably the busiest Saturday of the year is nothing short of a disgrace.

If there was a local election tomorrow, I couldn't see any reason to keep the current bunch of councillors in office.
