Seeing red

THERE is a traffic light controlled pedestrian crossing in Shaftesbury Avenue, just by the entrance to the leisure centre.

They do exactly what pedestrian crossings are supposed to do'“ you press the button to cross and they go red.

Almost instantly.

Whereas most others only go red when the road is clear, when you don't need them.

In its wisdom, the council has decided to change them.

The work was due to start on March 29 but much better to delay until after the Easter holidays.

That way the council can endanger a higher proportion of children's lives as they attempt to cross the road (as they walk to school) during the three week period that the lights will be out of action.

The children could walk to the lollipop person but that means crossing Trent Road which is like a race track as motorists cut through attempting to avoid the traffic lights on Goring Road.

And I bet when the work is completed the lights will only go red when the road is clear.
