Why so manybasic faults?

EVERY morning I walk into town for a newspaper, returning via the seafront. Over time, I have seen the various new designs and installations of the Next Wave project, but have refused to be drawn into the debate, preferring to see the completed article before commenting. But now I must.

The new flower beds are growing on me, but why couldn’t we have Eastbourne’s attractive flower beds?

And if the powers-that-be expect the ‘hedge’ between gardens and road will stop people stepping onto the beds they will have a very long wait. The plants are just not taking in many places.

Problems multiply with the play area equipment. Some of the triple wooden blocks have been removed for ‘Elf and Safety’, apparently being unstable for children to step on. If so, why wasn’t this spotted at the design stage and money saved accordingly?

It gets worse. One of the underground ‘telephone’ systems for children to speak to one another has never worked. Why? Because both ends of the underground tube were left pointing skywards for a few weeks and the tube filled with rainwater.

The ‘gravestone’ features are slowly sinking out of alignment because they have no proper foundations. Where were the council’s inspectors when they were installed? Just try to put up a garage in your garden and they’ll be on your doorstep making regular checks.

Lack of foundations is also a problem for the railway sleeper walls for children to walk on. Four-layer ones can be moved back and forth with your foot. The six or seven-layer ones move just as easily at the touch of your hands.

What happens if they move when children are playing on them? Again, where were health and safety when this feature was thought up?

The stone-effect kerb in front of the gardens is also beginning to tilt and cracks are appearing in the nearby pathway.

I’m not a qualified person, but these problems seem so obvious I just wonder where our council experts were when design and construction were being discussed.

It’s now going to cost another small fortune to correct these faults. If it does, someone’s head should roll.
