Theft hits hard however small

I OFTEN read your paper with dismay at the number of petty, walk-by thefts that appear to take place in Littlehampton.

Having experienced this myself last night, when someone decided to walk up to our front door and steal our solar-powered porch light, I am unable to understand what kind of person thinks it is acceptable to simply help themselves to other people's possessions.

It is not the value of the item stolen, which was a gift from a much-loved aunt, but the selfishness and audacity of the thief to walk up to my front door, and take my, not their, light.

I very much doubt that the thief will be reading this excellent community paper, but perhaps their family or neighbours will, and spot the timely addition of a globe-shaped solar light on a stick to their ill-gotten possessions.

If you do, please report them to the police.

It is this type of petty, low-level crime that leads to insular, mistrustful communities, and I for one would love to stamp it out.
