Steve Jewell improved school

I would like to endorse the comments made by Graham Toole-Mackson concerning the recent events at The Littlehampton Academy.

I was one of the governors involved in the appointment of Steve Jewell at his previous school.

His indefatigable efforts at both establishments are legendary.

While the percentage of five A-C grades at GCSE is only one measure, I see that in 2008 the previous community college achieved only 29 per cent whereas the percentage for the last published year, 2012, was 51 per cent.

I understand 2013 may not have followed this excellent record but virtually every school experiences occasional “blips” and the long term trend surely must be given most weight.

This causes me to query both Ofsted and the Woodard Academy Trust.

Nationwide questions have been raised about both the competence and fairness of Ofsted.

Similarly we need to ask whether academy trusts who seem to rely on a “revolving door” of headteachers and principals are enhancing the chances of good education for our students.

Are we treating our school leaders like football managers?

If outstanding individuals like Steve Jewell and Graham Toole-Mackson find it necessary to resign, who in their right mind will take on these roles?
