Smallest majority

I could not help a double-take when I read your headline (February 17) “Majority support plans to permit prom cycling”, followed by the statement “88 per cent of the 37 who answered were in favour” – i.e., 32 people!

There are 50,000 residents in Greater Littlehampton who, because there has been virtually no public advertising or discussion, have not been adequately consulted.

Like me, they are all pedestrians for about 66 per cent of their lives. Like me, some are enthusiastic cyclists. But have they deliberately been denied a say in this important local matter?

You were right, dear editor, to comment (February 3) that “the consultation does seem rather rushed”. It does indeed, and gives rise to deep suspicions.

Miriam Nichols, of Arun District Council, confirmed to me on January 31 that “this project has been under consideration for some two years”, that it was a joint scheme between Arun and West Sussex County Council and “that the scheme is now out for public consultation”. After two years?

We do not need patronising, Mr Dingemans (Arun cabinet member). We know that cycling is good exercise – and so is walking – for the majority.

Residents should be warned that, should this scheme complete, our ancient Promenade may evolve into being part of a national cycling network open to all touring, as well as local, cyclists.

So, practise being nimble. Harness your children and leave granny at home.

So much for the shams called “local democracy” and “The Big Society”.
