Positive response from highways sees new walkways

WHILE I sympathise with Mr G Quinlan (Gazette, May 13) at the negative response that he has received from West Sussex County Council's highways department regarding his safety proposals for Sea Road, I would like to reassure him that, elsewhere, positive progress continues.

As stated in my letter (Gazette, May 20), the highways officers have now been instructed to propose a scheme for approval by September, to provide a footpath alongside Hobbs Farm Cottages, in Sea Lane, which will be Rustington's first public traffic-calming scheme.

At Pier Road, the county council has agreed a highly imaginative scheme by Arun District Council to provide a major new riverside walk with at least part-pedestrianisation of the adjacent highway.

Continued demonstration of public interest and support is, however, required to ensure the fulfilment of these schemes and encourage the evaluation of the many other pedestrian safety measures needed in this area.

I therefore hope that Mr Quinlan, with his obvious interest and knowledge, will reconsider his proposal to leave.

His active support and participation is needed, in particular as regards the very complicated traffic and safety problems of Sea Road, to which he has clearly given much consideration.

Mr Quinlan: Please do not leave!
