LETTER: Cycling ban in Broadbridge Heath is parochial idiocy

I was cycling down Wickhurst Lane in Broadbridge Heath the other day, when a man pruning his roses kindly pointed at a new shiny sign and informed me this leisurely pursuit is forbidden.

He told me this is because there are ‘so many’ cyclists using the route that they represent unfair risk to the several residents when using their cars (an accident could up their insurance), to dog walkers (barking mad surely?) and thus (and this was his clincher) to themselves.

Interestingly, I was in central London the next day and I noticed many buses, cars and bikes, on the same roads, with none banned.

I’m unsure whether I should be grateful to whichever authority deemed Wickhurst Lane so dangerous to cyclists as to ban them, or to hope their office collapses as a reward for their parochial idiocy?
