Following the saga

ALTHOUGH I live in Arundel, I have been following the saga of Littlehampton Hospital.

From what I can remember reading years ago, the land the hospital was built on was given free by the then Duke of Norfolk. That being the case, he would have put his usual clause in the contract, etc., like he did when the Norfolks donated the land for Arundel’s swimming pool, for the benefit of the people of the town.

If the Duke at the time did the same thing with the land he gave for the Littlehampton Hospital, then the NHS, now that it has demolished the old hospital, would not be able to sell off the land and use the money elsewhere, would it, as the locals would not benefit?

The Duke’s archivist at Arundel Castle is a Dr John Martin Robinson. He may be able to help in this matter if the documents are still in existence.

Good luck.
