Dave agreeing with Nick way to success

THE SHEER arrogance of Roger Nash's letter (Gazette, May 20) is breathtaking.

He implies that all those who voted Liberal Democrat in the general election really wanted a return of Gordon Brown's government, and that the coalition agreement is a betrayal!

Can I remind him that nationally 36 per cent voted Conservative, 29 per cent Labour, and 23 per cent Liberal Democrat, but under our discredited voting system Tories won 306 seats, Labour 258 and Lib Dems only 57 .

Labour has been in power for 13 years, but broke promises to reform the voting system, fully reform the House of Lords, presided over the expenses scandal and widened the gap between rich and poorest in our country.

People wanted, and voted for a change, and produced a balanced Parliament.

The coalition agreement is supported by around two-thirds of the population, and significant Lib Dem policies will be enacted, such as raising the income tax threshold to 10,000, a referendum on changing the way we vote, abolishing the expensive and useless ID card scheme, and reducing our unsustainable national debt and borrowing.

Liberal Democrats are not "propping-up" the Tories, it is truly a shared coalition, with concessions from both sides, just as happens in most successful economies such as Germany, Scandinavia, Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, etc.

There is a huge task of reform necessary, most of which Labour missed in its anxiety to be more Tory than the Tories.

The Liberal Democrats remain the major opposition in West Sussex, at county and district level, and will continue with a growing party membership since the election to make Britain a fairer and progressive society.
