Keep bikes on the road

I AM sorry that Kathleen Skeet got hit by a car while negotiating a roundabout on her bike, but that does not alter the fact that pavement cyclists are generally a menace to pedestrians, and that includes young cyclists.

I have had to take avoiding action from pavement cyclists twice this week '“ one was a young man using a mobile phone, and he was simply oblivious of my presence.

Another was a school-age child who appeared round a corner, cycling at full pelt with no regard whatsoever for whom he might meet ahead of him.

And these are just two examples.

I also particularly dislike cyclists whooshing up from behind me when I am walking along the pavement, and I know this is a discomfort I share with some of my acquaintances.

So, no, while cyclists may well be safer on the pavements, this is at the price of reducing the safety of pedestrians, so they should most certainly stay on the road.
