Observer Comment: Let's hope sun shines on Armed Forces Day

SUNSHINE is promised for tomorrow (Saturday) and it's just in time for the Armed Forces Day Parade in Egerton Park.

The organisers must be thrilled that after all their hard work and planning the one element over which they have no control is coming good.

It was a different story last weekend when the League of Friends of Bexhill Hospital made the “agonising” decision to call off their annual garden party which is the major fundraiser of their year.

The band was warned not to come, the clown and magician cancelled, and everyone stayed at home.

Other organisers stood firm and went ahead anyway.

The gazebo at St Mary’s church summer fete in Ninfield was nearly blown off the ground while supporters of St Michael’s in Glassenbury Drive had to find warmth and their ploughman’s lunch inside the church hall while undaunted scouts did blustery battle with the barbecue stand outside.

It’s a shame for everyone when the scones have been baked, sponges filled, and burger baps cut open, for all that effort to be spoiled by rotten weather.

Of course we’re used to it in England and try to make the best of the damp situation, but its great when it all goes right - so let’s enjoy the great outdoors tomorrow and feel glad for those veterans as they march past that, for now, there’s no rain on their parade.
