Archimedes' Principle

I have to agree with Messrs Brodie and Turner (Letters, Observer, July 19) on the subject Concrete spells floods. It really is a simple case of Archimedes' Principle. If you put a man in a bath of water the water level rises. If you drop concrete foundations into flood plains, surplus water destined for the flood plains ends up in people's living rooms!

Indeed, as Mr Turner states: ‘the inevitable consequence... would be to greatly increase the flooding... due to the increase in surface run-off caused by covering green fields with concrete and tarmac.’

One can only assume it is down to greed on the part of the property developers and the blinkered attitude of Arun Council that further development is allowed.

The message is clear. the building in our low-lying flood plains and the filling in of drainage ditches must STOP. When will the ‘powers that be’ start paying attention to scientific fact and local opinion?
