A:27 Make the road safer

THANK you for your excellent report in the Herald about the latest tragedy on the A27.

How sad it must be for the relatives and friends of those people killed on this road that we campaigners for a speed reduction immediately grab the opportunity to stress the point.

Unfortunately, it seems to be the only way to get through to the authorities.

In your report, Martin Deller (Highways Agency) said: "We believe people being able to use gaps to cross a 70mph carriageway at that point is a problem and that is why we want to address it".

Thank you, Mr Deller, you've got it. But, the problem is not the gap, it is the speed, which is more often 85mph.

Turning left on a 70mph carriageway must also be a problem. One more point: imagine signalling left to enter the Castle Goring estate with an aggressive driver behind you who doesn't believe the signal but thinks you are slowing down just to annoy him.

It's pretty scary turning at speed to try to get home safely.

I won't describe the obscene gestures we have to endure as they drive past. Protected lane, please!

Or is this a matter for the police, too?
