A27 COMMENT SPECIAL: It's time to enforce the law here

NO-ONE can fail to be disturbed by yet another tragic accident on this stretch of the A27.

However, I take issue with those who see the solution to the problem as further speed restrictions.

If one looks at the present situation, coming west from Worthing, at the start of the dual carriageway there are some 300 metres (not measured precisely) where the current 40mph limit applies before the de-restriction sign.

Invariably, when travelling this section of the road one is overtaken by numerous vehicles, the drivers of which believe the start of the dual carriageway gives them licence to increase their speed.

Consequently, many are travelling well over the speed limit before the derestriction sign.

If a more rigid approach to enforcing the current restriction was in force, a reduction in the high speeds in the Castle Goring area would occur naturally.

The answer is for drivers to become more responsible and respect the current speed limits and tougher enforcement of those limits.

I do not recall ever seeing a speed trap in this area '“ a camera some 50 metres prior to the derestriction may well be a useful deterrent.
