Open gardens invitation

GARDEN lovers are cordially invited to enjoy a leisurely afternoon visiting five of Bexhill's most stunning gardens, which will be open to the public for viewing under the National Garden Scheme on Sunday May 24th.

Each year approximately one and a half million people visit an NGS garden, helping to raise over two million pounds for various charities, including Macmillan Cancer Relief, Help the Hospices and Crossroads Caring for Carers.

The five Bexhill gardens, which will be open under the scheme, are: The Clinches, Collington Lane East, 66, Cranston Avenue, 1, Ashcombe Drive, 41a and 57, Barnhorn Road.

Owners of the gardens have much to be proud of and Pat Crouch, of 41a, Barnhorn Road, openly admits to being a "plantaholic" and has had her garden appear on TV in the BBC series 'Open Gardens'.

Karen and Steve Hewgill at 66, Cranston Avenue last opened their gardens in 2007. Since then they have made substantial changes with the aim of growing more of their own food.

Richard & Liz Chown of 1, Ashcombe Drive say that both their garden, and the gardens at The Clinches, have also opened previously and they all endeavour to make the day an enjoyable visit to all who attend.

There's also the added bonus of purchasing a plant or two along with refreshments of teas and home-made cakes en route.

Liz said: "We aim to entertain and delight our visitors. People can stroll around and enjoy the home-made cakes provided by Macmillan at 57, Barnhorn Road, and be tempted by the plant stalls at some of the gardens as they potter around."

She added: "The owners are all looking forward to welcoming lots of visitors."

The five gardens are open between 11am '“ 5pm. There's a combined entrance fee of 4 for adults with free entry for children.
