No 48 opens in Devonshire Road

Does Bexhill really need another cafe?

According to new owner Andy Rimmer the answer is yes - if it's different to the others, done well, and is what local people want.

He has taken over light and spacious premises at No 48 Devonshire Road aiming to provide a sanctuary for all ages, from older people wanting peace as they contemplate the artwork or read, and enjoy their marmite on toast, to young children who have a beach hut area at the back to relax and kick back in.

No48 will be officially opened tomorrow (Saturday October 10) at 3pm by sporting heroes Row4Charity but in the meantime Andy is working towards a new type of cafe in Bexhill which will be home to local artwork, include a gift shop, and become a place for customers to linger.

Andy said: "We are serving a market that has not been serviced before, to give people something different. We are trying to provide an area where people will be comfortable for an hour or two and not be in and out in a few minutes."

The cafe is serving simple snacks, such as freshly baked potatoes, or sandwiches or panini, alongside a range of teas including green, black and white, herbal, redbush and chai latte.

A feature of No48 is the display of artwork on the walls produced by local artists which can be purchased or just enjoyed.

Andy said: "I have seen some really good artwork but it is usually in art galleries, on specific occasions or to showcase particular work. But I think everyone is interested in art but it is not always in front of them...so it is nice to be here, and look around and see art, and buy it if you want to. If you don't it is still pleasing on the eye."

Another feature of the business is that Andy intends to support the local community by buying local produce and employing local people - he has taken on seven members of staff so far - and it is important for him to be part of Bexhill life.

"There is a seaside theme with beach huts which are synonymous with the Bexhill beach, and facilities for children and families, with a lounge area for relaxing in comfortable surroundings.

"There has been a lot of comments from people walking past...saying - not another tea and coffee place. But then they come in and say it's really good, and that it's what Bexhill needs. I think if you are going to do it, you can do it well. If you are going to do something then do it differently, and that is what we are trying here. We are not wanting to step on anyone's toes, we are just trying to provide an alternative and different environment. I don't know if Bexhill needs another cafe, but I think it needs a good one. It's about doing something different and providing the people of Bexhill with what they deserve."
