Ninfield Village Voice - October 17

CHRISTIAN Women's Fellowship: The guest speaker at the meeting on Wednesday, October 8, was Nathan Preece who had called his talk Am I an Interesting Guy.

He began with details of his religious work, lay preacher, commissioner and interim moderator with the United Reformed Church.

Mr Preece also mentioned his late wife and the teaching she had done with illiterate children.

When Nathan was young he had a stammer which was cured by taking singing lessons for which he is eternally grateful.

His National Service was with the Welsh Guards since when he has travelled around the world.

Mr Preece concluded by saying that keeping the commandment 'Love thy neighbour as thyself' is good as it one of the best.

HOOE OPEN GROUP: What lovely sunshine the ladies had for their meeting on Friday, October 10, and it was most appropriate for the subject their speaker had come to talk about was bees.

Mr Pratt not only keeps bees but produces an interesting range of products from the honey.

He brought with him an early example of a beehive and gave a fascinating talk about beekeeping after which he was asked several questions. Mr Pratt was then invited to join the ladies for tea.

On Friday, November 14, the speaker will be from Beauty Haven with advice on How To Look Lovelier.

NINFIELD Flower Group: Tomorrow (Saturday) the members will be working hard from early in the morning until the late afternoon sorting and organising the jumble for their Autumn Jumble Sale. The doors of the Memorial Hall will open at 2pm and in addition to the possible bargains you will find a tombola and refreshments. Money raised is for their Flower Festival in 2009.

SOCIAL EVENT: I was so pleased to be invited by Thelma and Peter to join the lunch party they held to celebrate their daughter Sandra's marriage to Hamish.

Most of the guests have been friends of the family for many years, had watched Sandra grow up and were delighted to share the family's happiness. The food was delicious, thank you Thelma.

GOLDEN CIRCLE: The next meeting is on Tuesday, October 21, at 2.30pm in the Memorial Hall, Bexhill Road. The guest speaker is Brion Purdey who has called his talk Saints and Sinners which does sound fascinating. The ladies will be bringing extra items and boxes for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. It has been arranged with the chairman that they will be collected by a British Legion representative on the following Wednesday morning. I have been asked to mention that a note from the donor is always very welcome, the recipient appreciates the personal touch.

FALSE START: The woman walked into the doctors surgery and was surprised by the number of people waiting. Going to the hatch to report that she was there she was given a numbered ticket.

Realising she knew most of the people waiting she asked, "Is there an epidemic in the village? Are we having a raffle? "No", said Vera, "It's the flu jabs".

"Oh, I haven't come for that, I have a doctor's appointment." She made her way back to the hatch, "I've an appointment,"she said, handing back her ticket.

The receptionist checked on the computer, smiled, and said "No, that's next week." A hasty departure followed.

MOBILE LIBRARY: This welcome service will be in our two villages tomorrow (Saturday) calling first in Hooe where you will find it parked opposite Denbigh Court between 1.50pm and 2.35pm. From there it is driven to Ninfield calling first in Millfield, arriving at 2.50pm and staying until 3.25pm. From there it is driven to Downs View where it stays between 3.40pm and 4.05pm. I do hope you find a good read.
