Last Friday, June 8, Hooe Open Group held their meeting to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee, marking Her Majesty the Queen’s 60th year on the Throne.

The Organiser Edna Wallis, was determined to make the meeting very special, as the occasion demanded. To this end she invited a number of local dignitaries to attend the meeting in order to participate in cutting a specially iced cake and proposing the health and long life of Queen Elizabeth II, with a glass of “Bubbly”. The ceremony of cutting the cake was performed by the Rt. Hon. Greg Barker MP. Minister of State for Energy & Environment, who also proposed the loyal toast. Also present as guests of the club was the recently installed Mayor of Bexhill, The Worshipful Mrs. Joanne Gadd, who was accompanied by her Consort, Councillor Brian Gadd. Other distinguished guests of the Hooe Open Group were Councillors’ Barbara Strevett and Pam Doodes from Wealden Council as well as Councillors’ Stuart Earl and Deirdre Williams representing Rother District Council. There was a full turnout of members, who entered into the spirit of the occasion by dressing up in red, white and blue outfits and decorating the Village Hall to reflect the theme of the event. Due to the extra time required to formally acknowledge the importance of the afternoon’s celebration, the club commenced the meeting at 2pm rather than 2.30. The arrival of the Rt. Hon. Greg Barker being scheduled for 3pm. Therefore the first half of the meeting was taken up by a fascinating talk by Pam Vielers called “All our Yesterdays”. Pam brought with her a wide selection of curiosities from a by-gone age and explained in detail their application. As usual there is never enough time to fully cover such an extensive collection from a bygone age. They will certainly book Pam to come again in the very near future, when more time can be devoted to her talk and presentation.

The success of any event relays on the members doing their bit to make everything run to plan. The members of Hooe Open Group certainly contributed in making the June meeting such a resounding success. Ninfield Bowls Club have been busy of late. On June 6 they played Mayfield winning 58-50, June 8 saw them play against VP’s (a team of 20 men!) and lost 85-117. They lost again to Hellingly on June 9 7-88 and June 10 they were doing well against Beckley until rain stopped play with the scores at 31-35. Over last weekend (Saturday and Sunday) a team of 4 from Ninfiled Bowls Club played in the New Romney Invitation consisting of 40 teams of 4. The Ninfield members came 6th overall, winning 5 out of 6 games with the final game being played in harsh conditions.

Ninfield Memorial Hall are celebrating 80 years and are including a ‘thanksgiving’ for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. As part of their celebrations, Christian Voices, the musical drama group, will be performing “Lost & Found”, at Ninfield Methodist Church Hall on Saturday, June 16 at 3.00pm. The play is based on the parable of the Prodigal Son. It was written by Alan Young and the songs composed by Dave Chamberlin. The performance will be in aid of the Bexhill Caring Community. On Sunday June 17, 2.30pm there will be a Service of Thanksgiving and Praise led by Revd. Ian Wales which will be followed with cream teas! You are welcome to join in with the celebrations.

Ninfield Local History Group will have a guest speaker on June 21 with ‘What Did Your Ancestors Do in The War?’ with Kevin Regan. On July 19, ‘Faces and Memories’ with Jim and Brian, there is no meeting in August and on September 20, ‘What the Census Tells Us’. Everyone is welcome to the meetings. There is a charge of £1 for members and £2 for non-menbers to help cover the cost of refreshments and guest speakers. Annual membership costs £10. The next Ninfield Panel Meeting and Neighbourhood Watch meeting is on July 3 in the Reading Room (Church Lane) at 7.30pm. Do go along and hear the latest news

on crime and how to avoid being a victim. It is expected that our PCSO, Daryl

Holter will be in attendance at the Panel Meeting.

Ninfield Carnival will be held on July 14 with an Olympic theme. To start the event there will be an official Opening Ceremoney with the ‘Olympic Flame’ lighting a beacon on the recreation ground. There is a requirement for 100 people to perform an easy routine with flags, ribbons, hoops ect. There will be 3 rehearsals required. There is also a need for volunteers to marshal the event as the Police have advised they are already stretched to cover this event. If you can help, please contact Sami as above.

Ninfield Bonfire Society’s ‘Ninfield Gig’ is back, July 28 at Elm Cottage, Marlpits Lane. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Ninfield Stores at the following prices: Adults £10 each, Children £5 each, Family (2 adults, 3 children) £25. Children 5 and under go free. Ticket prices at the gate are: Adults £12, children £6 (no family tickets).

Looking ahead, The Arthritis Research Summer Garden Lunch is being held on Saturday August 4 at Elm Cottage, Marlpit Lane, 12.30pm. This is by kind invitation of Pete and Carol. All Welcome by booking with Ann. 892593. Tickets £7.50 each.
