New community railman for the Rye area

Kevin Barry has been appointed as the new Community Rail Development Officer for Rye’s Marshlink line.

Kevin is based at Rye station and works for the Sussex Community Rail Partnership (‘CRP’), a ‘not for profit’ organisation which works with partners to encourage greater use of local railways.

Kevin: said “I was very pleased to be appointed to this role as I feel I have a lot to offer the communities on all the stations from Ashford through to Eastbourne, helping to reconnect the community with its railway.

“I am keen to work with partners to help improve the look of our stations and to encourage events to take place, and for more people to use the trains and other sustainable transport to get to the villages and towns.”

Kevin also said that he is looking for volunteers to help achieve future projects and have the satisfaction of seeing visitors and residents enjoying their efforts.

Up until 2004 Kevin had been working in the regional press for 32 years. He is also the Rye Town Sergeant , which involves mainly looking after the Mayor on ceremonial duties and carrying the town maces.

Sam Bryant, Sussex CRP’s community rail development manager, added :- “It’s wonderful to welcome Kevin to this role, I know he will be a great asset to the us, and the line.”

Kevin Boorman, the chair of the Marshlink community rail partnership, said : “I am especially pleased to welcome Kevin to this job, as he is very local and really understand how the local community works.

“The Marshlink is really special, I remember when it was under threat of closure over 40 years ago. It has since grown into a vital transport and community asset, and I look forward to working with Sam and Kevin to continue to develop its potential.”
