Mums' new helpers in West Sussex

All the new advisors spent ten weeks on a peer-supporting training course.

They were taught how breastfeeding works and how mothers can be supported to breastfeed.

Their achievement was celebrated in a graduation ceremony held at The Hub in Bognor Regis.

Judith Cartwright, West Sussex NHS Primary Care Trust's breastfeeding peer support co-ordinator, said: "Peer supporters make a big difference.

"Often mums who are feeling unsure or unconfident about breastfeeding would prefer to talk to someone who has been through the experience, rather than a health professional, and that is what these women can offer."

The 'graduates' will support breastfeeding mothers in drop-ins in Bognor and Yapton.

They will also visit new mothers in St Richard's Hospital.
