More free blanket tests after results shock

CONSUMER safety watchdogs are to repeat free electric blanket tests in Worthing that saw one in three blankets declared unsafe last year.

County council Trading Standards officers will join fire safety experts when they offer the tests across the county later this month.

Last year's shocking results revealed 73 of the 574 blankets tested were classed as dangerous while a further 127 were "not recommended for further use".

David Beardsley, Head of Operations, Trading Standards Service, said: "Consumers need to be vigilant and should look out for:

* Signs of wear and tear.

* Scorch marks.

* Loose connections.

* Any damage to the flex.

"An electric blanket is more likely to be a fire risk if it is over three years old and should be checked. However, it is important to be aware that new electric blankets can also become dangerous if used or handled incorrectly."

The free blanket tests are carried out by a qualified electrical engineer. Phone 01243 642124 to book an appointment for a free test.

The tests will take place in Worthing at the fire station in Ardsheal Road, Broadwater, on Wednesday, October 18 and Thursday, October 19 (9.30am-12.30pm and 1pm-4.30pm on both days).
