Meet Worthing's new mayor

CHRISTINE BROWN has become the 92nd mayor of Worthing.

The Lib Dem councillor for Selden ward took over the role from Heather Mercer at the annual council meeting held at Worthing Town Hall.

She said: "I am very honoured to be the 92nd mayor of Worthing.

"Heather has been a wonderful ambassador this past year and I will do my best to continue her good work."

Christine was born in Shoreham in 1948 but her family moved to Worthing when she was three.

She was educated at Heene School and the County Secondary Modern School for Girls at Durrington.

She trained as a pharmaceutical dispenser, then a lab technician before becoming a doctor's secretary.

She met her husband, David, when she was 18 at a fencing club and they married when she was 22.

They have four daughters, three grandchildren and another on the way.

Christine has been a councillor for 12 years and has served on numerous committees, including planning and housing, as well as outside bodies.

She is also a governor for Chesswood Middle School.

Over the years, she has been a Sunday school teacher and a Guide captain, as well as a member of the Civil Defence and chairperson of Worthing Animal Clinic.

Her mayoral charities for the year will be Worthing and District Scope, Worthing Citizens Advice Bureau and the Stray Cats Youth Drop-in Centre.

Christine said: "I am immensely proud to be taking on this role for the next year and I promise you that it is my intention to do all I can to promote this wonderful town of ours."
