MAJOR FIRE IN LEWES

School Hill in Lewes is still closed this afternoon (4.20pm) as firefighters tackle a major blaze in an historic building.

Flames were seen shooting from the roof of flats above the Mackays homeware store.

Police have closed the road and traffic is being diverted away from the scene via East Street.

The fire brigade has sent a mobile incident control centre to the scene and an aerial ladder.

A large number of fire engines are also present.

A large crowd watched the fire. School Hill - part of Lewes High Street - remains closed.
