Love those heads or lose them Worthing

THE campaign to save Elisabeth Frink's Desert Quartet, has stepped up, with hundreds signing a petition.

The Worthing Society and the Worthing Arts Council were meeting the public in Montague Street, to explain the issues surrounding the potential loss to Worthing of the outstanding work by Dame Elisabeth, comprising four bronze heads on the western facade of the Montague Centre.

Within only a few hours, more than 400 people had signed the petition.

A spokesperson for The Worthing Society said: "This week, we have produced very tangible evidence that the town is rallying behind our campaign to keep the Desert Quartet in Worthing.

"We urge The Avon Group to re-consider their position. We recognise that the Desert Quartet was an outstanding and imaginative benefaction to this town.

"The community simply wishes to see the company and Humphrey Avon stand by the spirit of the Per Cent for Art Scheme and desist from their attempts to remove this great work.

"We would like to see a commemorative plaque, as a celebration of the Desert Quartet as a lasting symbol of an outstanding collaboration between business and the arts, which benefited the community and everyone else involved."

Shoreham artist Alison Lapper was the first person to sign The Worthing Society's petition.

Alison said: "I think it's absolutely disgusting that these sculptures could be taken down.

"Art should be part of society and it should remain public.

"They belong to Worthing and they should stay in Worthing, that's really important.
