She had a strong theatrical background and set off on a tour of major cities, including Johannesburg, at a time when apartheid was at its height.

Hide Ad"But we didn't see any black faces in the audience at all so we went into the townships and performed in halls that were sometimes barely more than large huts before very excited audiences. I fell in love with South Africa at that time," she recalled.
Kim stayed there for a year, and it gave her a thirst for more knowledge, so she came back home and trained as a teacher, staying on for an extra year to gain a BEd degree.
