I don’t wish to be the bearer of bad tidings, so let’s just say that we do perhaps need to be vigilant about the presence of wild boar in our area. I always ask if anyone has anything to add to the village voice, and Sue White had left me a message about her dog, having been badly injured by a wild boar on 1st June. The dog was being taken for a walk in Iden by Sue’s nephew, across a field of oil seed rape, and the dog suddenly let out a yelp, and was seen to be attacked by a wild boar .The boar then proceeded to chase Sue’s nephew, who managed to get away safely. The dog required a two hour operation and is thankfully okay, but wild boar are around. Fortunately these incidents are rare, but it does pose the question that what if perhaps a young child had been present, or someone unable to outrun a boar. At Christmas time last year, the son of an Iden man was injured by a boar in Peasmarsh, and had a nasty gouge on his leg requiring medical treatment. Now I’m no expert on wild boar, but these incidents speak for themselves, so just be aware when walking our fields and woodlands. I’ve seen two wild boar late at night, going into the woods near Beckley. They are around all right. Perhaps they attack if they have their young in tow. You could put what I know about wild boar on a postage stamp, but I’d gladly document, other people’s knowledge, and sightings. Anyway Sue, I hope that ‘Bessie’ makes a speedy recovery.

As a child, I lived in a gold mining town in Northern Ontario, and there we had bears, moose, skunks and frostbite to contend with. Everywhere there is something to be wary of, but I can’t say I was even sprayed by a skunk. That would have been something different to put in the Village Voice, or dragged out at a dinner party, but no. What it boils down to, as in the case of ‘wild boar’, is forewarned is forearmed

So what is happening in Iden this week?

Firstly, there will be a service of Holy Communion in Iden Parish Church on Sunday15th June at 9.30 am.

There will be a ‘Pop In’, on Monday 23RD June in the village hall at 11 am. Everyone is welcome, so do come along for coffee/tea, biscuits and a chat [I’m telling you some of the gossip would make your hair curl !] It’s friendly and fun, and we sell a few books and a bit of bric a brac towards the village hall funds. It would be lovely to be able to have the building plans funded for the village hall. We all spend so much of our lives in the village hall, and it, like our church, our pub, and our shop, is an oasis. There will be ‘Bingo’ in the village hall on Thursday 26TH June. Doors open at 2pm, eyes down at 2.30pm. Everyone from Iden and surrounding villages is welcome. There is a raffle, and a light tea is served, and also, a. Jackpot game has been introduced, and a ‘flyer’ besides the ordinary [legs eleven] type games. It’s just a bit of fun. I must say I’m quite hooked for those of you who have never played Bingo, it’s pure escapism.

There was a Parish Council meeting in the village hall on Tuesday3rd June at 7.30pm. Michael Miller chaired the meeting. Minutes were read and signed. District councillor Nick Ramus spoke about the new regime for refuse collection . Leaflets will be distributed to each household, and it will be necessary to order new brown bins for garden refuse if we haven’t already done so

Parish Councillors were asked to agree on usage of Iden’s playing field for St. Michael’s C of E primary school Playden, Age Concern, Rye Retreat and Buckswood School, authorisation of such given to the Parish Clerk.

There was a discussion about the possibility of adding more names to the war memorial, subject to specific criteria, to be agreed by the council at a later date.

Two special dates were given out at the meeting, 22nd July, and 31st July, when there will be instruction on ‘Basic Life Support’, in the village hall at 7.30pm. This is both useful and topical in view of our impending village defibrillator.

Rainfall given to us this month by Anne Banning was 1.81inches.

The televised D-Day remembrance programmes were very moving weren’t they? I don’t suppose there is one of us that wasn’t in some way touched personally by a family member who fought for our freedom .What a poignant year this is. A whole year, with the khaki colour of soldier’s uniforms flashing in and out of our minds.

All this talk of wild boar and bears, yet I’m really the biggest ‘wooz’, when it comes to nature IF it comes into the house. If the cat brings a mouse in I head for the hills. .The other day my husband had gone to bowls, and there was this rustling noise going on and on, and I thought “he’s a long time getting through the door”. Anyway, it was this huge bird in my lounge. Well! I stood by the gate with no shoes on waiting for his return [it’s the flapping] So if anyone in Iden is planning a safari, don’t put me on the list. However, I love birds [outside] I sometimes even butter the bread I put out, for a little treat for them. That’s probably why that one came in the other day, looking for a bit of ‘Anchor Spreadable’!
