Police are now appealing for people who may have seen the attack near the war memorial by Caffyns Field, at about 10.30pm on July 5.

DC Jamie Carruthers said: “This was a vicious and unprovoked attack. I would like to hear from anyone who saw the assault or a group of youths running away.”

They should contact police on 101, email [email protected] or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting serial number 1730 5/7.

Three local boys, aged 14, 15 and 16, have been arrested and bailed for further enquiries until August 2.
