Poor, poor Mr Field. Not only is he trudging the streets in the early hours delivering our post, he's also battling against liver chill and constipation.

Hence, perhaps, that rather haunted look in his eyes.

But fortunately help was at hand. Yes, Bile Beans made him whole again as a little advert in the West Sussex Gazette from 75 years ago makes clear.

It's one of a series for those wondrous beans..

Take a glance at the Gazette from 1932 and one thing is obvious:our current obsessions with health, fads and fashions are nothing new.

In fact, they might just be less acute now than they used to be.

It's difficult to imagine Seigel's Syrup with its promise to end acidity and flatulence making page one in 2007.
