Grants for jubilee street parties

DO YOU fancy a street party in your road to mark The Queen s Golden Jubilee this year? Or you may favour some other way to publicly mark the occasion.

If so, there is a share of 4,500 up for grabs to help organisers.

February 6 is the 50th anniversary of The Queen s ascension to the throne on the death of her father, King George VI.

In October Rother council announced it would give away up to 9,000 to help public celebrations go with a swing. But, to date, only half that amount has been allocated.

Applications are invited from schools, youth groups, clubs, committees, residents associations, charities and churches to the money towards commemorative events.

Street parties cannot be paid for by the fund, but this week (jan 21) the cabinet agreed to pay for streets to be closed for parties, which can be at any time of the year. But it will be a one-off payment.

The Golden Jubilee Fund can only be used for celebratory events that benefit local organisations, charities, or for community facilities, such as tree-plantings or children s sports. But the cabinet agreed to pay a collective 100 fee for streets to be closed for parties.

The council will put the application in during April, so if you want your street included on the list, write in with the party date, time and street name by the end of March.

The street closure payment was the idea of Coun Martin Kenward (Bexhill St Martins) on hearing there was still cash going begging.
