Funeral of Bonfire stalwart

MORE than a hundred mourners attended a funeral for a 'larger than life character' and Bonfire society stalwart today (Wednesday).

Rob Cowley, 57, a Cliffe Bonfire Society member for more than 40 years died suddenly at his Lee Road home on June 22.

A service took place at St Thomas a Beckett Church in the Cliffe High Street where a Cliffe Bonfire Society guard of honour, dressed in the traditional costume of black and white guernseys, oversaw Mr Cowley's coffin being taken into the church.

Ric Newth, chairman of Cliffe Bonfire Society, said: 'Rob was a real character within Cliffe Bonfire Society whose input will be sorely missed.

'He often found innovative and practical solutions to challenges over the years and committed more time and energy to the society than any one of us can truly appreciate.

'He will be sorely missed, but remembered fondly for his entertaining approach to life and his extreme generosity.'

Mr Cowley also enjoyed a long association with MDJ Light Brothers where he worked.

A statement from the company said: 'Rob has been part of our operations

for approaching 40 years.

'He was a much respected friend and colleague and his passing has caused great sadness amongst all who knew him.

'He will be remembered as one of life's true characters and we extend our deepest condolences to his family at this time.

'Rob was a real larger than life character, he had long hair and sunglasses, and he'd never be dressed in any other way.

'He also had a real gift for turning any situation into a funny story.'

His famil thanked friends for their support since his death.

He is survived by Joyce, his partner of 28 years, four stepchildren Alan, Terry, Debbie and Mandy, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
