Floats, fireworks and plenty of fun at Old Town Carnival

A jam-packed week of events will kick off this weekend as the Hastings Old Town Carnival celebrations return.

The schedule includes a host of family-friendly activities, exhibitions and shows, starting on Saturday, July 30 and culminating on Sunday, August 7.

The annual Tug O’ War competition will take place on July 30 outside the lifeboat station at the Stade at 10.30am.

The Hastings Old Town Carnival Queen will have her coronation on Saturday afternoon from 12.30pm on the stage of the ‘Nearly’ on The Beach Concert. The ceremony will be officiated by Home Secretary Amber Rudd and Brother Aelred Partridge.

The musical entertainment will come from the free ‘Nearly’ on the Beach Concert, which boasts two days of local bands and musicians on Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31 (see page 43).

Winkle Tossing, a firm favourite of the carnival week agenda, will return on Monday, August 1 from 4pm to 6pm on Winkle Island.

The Seaboot Race, in memory of Old Towner Peter Trickett who died in 2002, will also take place on August 1 in Courthouse Street from 6pm to 8pm.

The High Street Traders event will see who can run the fastest wearing Seaboots and a top hat along the length of Courthouse Street, round a lobster pot and back.

Timed certificates will be presented to all entrants and the winner is presented with Peter Trickett’s walking stick, to be held for one year.

The annual Bike Race will set off from Crown Lane at 5.30pm on Tuesday, August 2, while the ever-popular Pram Race will get underway at 7.30pm from the Cutter Pub on Wednesday, August 3.

The main event, the Grand Carnival Procession 2016, will grace the streets of the Old Town from 5pm to 8pm on Saturday, August 6.

The procession will start from Rock-a-Nore Road and culminate in a dusk firework display at the castle.
