First-aiders use pedal power to help save lives across the town

First-aiders in Bognor Regis are able to use two wheels to help save lives.

They have been the first members of St John Ambulance across Sussex to use a specially-equipped bike.

It had its first outing at the recent Bognor Prom 10k road race and is being stored by the volunteers.

It will be used at other major community events, such as Brighton Pride.

Matthew Codling, the operational services manager for St John Ambulance, said: "For St John Ambulance, speed is vital and getting to a patient as quickly as possible can often mean the difference between life and death.

"In certain circumstances at public events our ambulance movement is restricted because of the density of the crowds or the terrain. A bicycle is the perfect solution for our volunteers."

The customised bike was bought thanks to the fundraising of HM Revenue and Customs staff at Worthing.

They held bucket collections and bring-and-buy book sales to bring in 1,225 last year.

This was put towards the 1,740 total cost of the bike. Equipment such as basic first aid kits, defibrillators and oxygen can be carried in specially-designed panniers. These have the St John Ambulance logo to mean a first-aider on the bike is easily recognised.

Those using the cycle will receive specific training through nationally-recognised bodies to ensure their safety as well as that of other road users and pedestrians.
