Final days to get your names down for Worthing Birdman

A TEAM of Mexican restaurant staff who want to use their ponchos to fly are among the entry hopefuls into Worthing's first Birdman competition.

The Birdman competition, which involves fancy-dressed flyers seeing who can "fly" the furthest distance from the Pier, is being held in Worthing on the weekend of July 5 and 6.

The Worthing Town Centre Initiative has already been working hard to get plans in place for the competition, which was cancelled in Bognor due to the town's pier being demolished.

Now the work is focusing on the entries.

Sharon Clarke, town centre manager, said: "We have had lots of entries ranging from Mexican restaurant staff wanting to use their ponchos to fly, a Snow White and the seven dwarfs-style craft as well as pub staff and someone from NCP Services."

Around 30 application forms have been requested for the Worthing event and there are already 17 flyers who had entered in Bognor.

Mrs Clarke said: "Not everyone who applies will be selected.

"We will take things into account, such as if they are raising money for charity and how interesting they will be for the spectators."

Mrs Clarke added: "I have been absolutely delighted with the response. This is becoming a real community event which has created a real buzz in Worthing."

Those who think they can fly more than 100 metres should enter the Leonardo da Vinci and Condor classes and would need to fly a modified hang glider or similar craft.

The winner is the person who spends the longest time in the air with 30 up for grabs for each second aloft.

There is also a jackpot prize of 30,000 for the furthest flight over 100 metres.

The Kingfisher Class is more for the fun element, with prizes of 500, 250 and 100 awarded for the funniest and most colourful moments and the best fancy dress.

The deadline for entries is June 1.
