South East Water’s multi-million pound expansion and investment programme at its Arlington Water Treatment Works started on June 15 and is expected to be completed in August 2021.

It will help keep drinking water flowing to 30,000 homes across Sussex including Eastbourne.

A water company spokesperson said the project will ensure the site can continue to operate ‘24 hours a day’, ‘seven days a week’ ‘transforming’ river and groundwater into ‘crystal-clear’ drinking water for ‘decades to come’.

The spokesperson said the site treats up to 18 million litres of water a day, which is 210 litres every second.

Project manager Paul Beaumont said, “The drinking water we supply is amongst the best in the world and by continually investing and improving our infrastructure we make sure it remains first class.

“At Arlington Water Treatment Works we will build a new sludge processing plant, replace the large pumps which push water through our vast network of underground pipes to customers’ taps, as well as modernise our automated chemical treatment processes, improving the site’s resilience.”
