TWENTY-five years ago, an elm tree in the small field next to the house fell victim to Dutch Elm disease. John cut the tree down. Then a sucker from the dead tree grew once more into a handsome specimen, until last year, it once more was ravaged by Dutch Elm disease and died.

This caused us much distress but pleasure to a neighbour, who had complained of it blocking the view from his barn conversion.

As the tree was there before the barn conversion, we did not give the matter much consideration. However the thought that the weakened tree might crash into said barn conversion if there was a strong wind did.
