Dream made real for nursery

DREAMS can come true and the opening of a £700,000 purpose built nursery at Pebsham School is the proof.

The state of the art centre is a world of imagination for any child and is geared for "little people" from every angle including low vision panels in the doors to the specially designed low-level toilet cubicles and wash basins.

Sensory and soft play pods have been incorporated in the design along with a safe surface play area outside with a "grand prix" type track for trikes and cars.

The nursery was the product of a partnership between Glyne Gap School and Bexhill College aided by Pebsham School who provided the "hillock" on which it was built.

The project wiped out the county council's entire nursery capital for the year but it was an anonymous legacy of 140,000 that enabled a bid to be put together for other monies.

Glyne Gap head John Hassell said they had "seen our dreams realized" with the formal opening of the nursery. "It is a wonderful day for us: a really special day."

He said the centre catered for able children and those with disabilities under the care of Early Years Nursery manager Karen Woodgate and Bridget Baker, manager for Glyne Gap.

"When children with disabilities and without disabilities come together, everybody benefits," he said.

"Glyne Gap children come with a range of difficulties but playing and learning alongside children without special needs, they all learn.

"Every single child is valued and valuable. They are the leaders of the future and they are learning not to be frightened of difficulties but embrace them."

The Nursery has its own "Jamie Oliver" in Clare Fenton who serves up to 20 meals a day, all freshly homemade.

She shops daily so is able to buy fresh seasonal food, and although fish fingers are served on the menu, it is all 100 per cent cod. "There's no frying; everything is baked."

Meal times can be a sensory adventure too with assorted fruit, including the more exotic variety such as kiwis and mangos, on offer.

Chair of governors Dr Catharine Hollman had the honour of cutting the gold ribbon to declare the nursery officially open last week. Invited guests were then offered a buffet lunch served by Pebsham School pupils.

The Nursery is open from 8-6pm throughout the year and has some vacancies for September. For more information contact 223707.
