Don't ignore us say parish councils

THE Government should not ignore the work of parish and town councils, the Sussex Association of Local Councils has warned.

A commission has been established by the Government to look at ways of encouraging more people from a wider range of backgrounds to play a leading role in their community.

Association director Trevor Leggo has voiced concerns that the commission will only focus on the top tiers of local government.

He said: 'Parish and town councillors are closest to their local communities and have a significant role to play in local democracy.

'There are around 3,000 in Surrey and Sussex alone.

'A modern, pro-active local council makes a real difference to its community; for example by updating playgrounds, improving community centres, taking on minor road repairs and leading the community on planning issues and affordable housing. I am seeking a reassurance from the Minister that this issue will not be ignored in the study.'
