Day shows off a bumper crop of food and skills

DESPITE difficult growing conditions this year for flowers, vegetables and fruit, entries for Little Common Horticultural Society's annual show were up on last year.

A splendid display greeted the steady flow of visitors to Little Common Community Centre on Saturday afternoon.

The event was attended by mayor of Bexhill Bridget George and Cllr Joy Hughes. Cllr George presented winners with their awards and drew the raffle tickets, for which the top prize was a meal for two at the Cooden Beach Hotel.

The Floral Art section once again drew in the crowds, who were not disappointed by the interpretations of each subject and Audrey Christian topped the bill with her Summer Garland exhibit which won her Best in Show in this category.

John Pitman made up for missing last year's show by dominating the vegetable classes, and also walking away with flower and fruit section prizes as well!

How many variations can you have for set cake recipes? Visitors to the domestic section were amazed by the selection on offer and judges had a difficult task separating them. Jams, chutneys, marmalade and homemade wines added to the laden tables.

A handicrafts section, added this year, attracted quilting, tapestry pictures, greetings cards, and small hand knitted items, vying for room alongside a crowded photographic section.

All this augers well for the two-day show on June 19 and 20 next year to celebrate the club's 65th year, when an ambitious project hopes to bring together horticultural and craft clubs in East Sussex to celebrate A Decade of Gardening at the Stone Cross Nurseries site in Polegate.
