Dangerous pavements plea by councillors

BEXHILL councillors have made a plea to county highways officers to end the scandal of Bexhill's dangerous pavements.

East Sussex county members Brian Gadd and Ron Dyason made their point at a meeting with officers on Monday called by county cabinet lead member for transport and environment, Cllr Tony Reid.

Cllr Reid has given approval for the piazza-style refurbishment of Devonshire Square.

Cllr Gadd said afterwards that he had impressed on the meeting the necessity for surfacing the new pedestrian area of the square with asphalt rather than traditional paving slabs.

He told the gathering that the cost of re-surfacing the town's problem pavements with asphalt was greatly outweighed by the cost of ambulance attendance, hospital treatment and medical aftercare for the many elderly people who tripped and fell on the town's uneven paving.
